What are some good drills to improve myself in breaststroke alot?

it was my first year swimming and im pretty good at breast but i want to get a lot faster but i need some drills to get me a lot faster for next season|||Because breastroke is so complicated you should first break it down into smaller components. For the kick obviously use a kickboard; to work on the pull alone, kick butterfly.

Pull: You need to make sure you're keeping your elbows *up* instead of sliding them back when you pull. Visualize yourself "reaching over a barrel." This will ensure that you're using you entire forearm to grip the water and pull instead of just your hands and wrists.

Kick: Breastroke kicking always has two parts; first you bring your feet up to your butt, *then* you turn out your ankles and kick back. Most people spread their ankles out way too early. Try doing "inchworm drill" w/ a kickboard- just bring your feet up to your butt, keeping them pretty close together, then back down. (In other words don't kick out in this drill). Next try kicking w/ a pullbuoy (it's extremely hard at first!) to ensure that you don't let your legs go too wide. It actually saps your energy, wastes time and is less explosive than a narrow kick, plus you may get knee injuries. You want your ankles to go out wide but *not* your knees. Trust me on this! Then you fire back hard...

Turn: This is important, it will shave *seconds* of a 100. You should never, never pull yourself up on the wall when you do a turn, nor should you treat a turn as a pausing point for breath. You will lose a ton of time. Practice your turn against a flat wall where there is no gutter at all to grab onto. My coach managed to cut off our gutter by sticking kickboards against them; but if you can't do it in a pool, practice the motions against a normal wall. In the turn you just have to touch and go, lightning fast.|||Use a kickboard and work on ur leg kick. Go down the pool doin 1 pull and 2 or 3 kicks. Work underwater and practice ur keyhole and ur turns. Make sure u push with ur legs and then glideeeeeeee. The glide is the fastest part of ur stroke. Work on ur dive and the length u get on it. Count how many breststroke strokes it takes to get down the pool, and try and reduce it everytime. Try doin the leg kick on ur back, wif no backstroke arms. Just keep practisin and training regularly and ur times will improve and push yourself every session.

Hope this helps and good luck!|||i have been swimming for 6 years and the drills that my coach always had me do for breaststroke is to kick three times, then stroke twice, then repeat down the pool. it might sound sort of stupid but trust me, it really works!!!|||do one arm at a time. so 25 yds right hand, (still pulling the same way and still kicking both legs) then 25 yds left arm.

stick the arm that you're not using strait in front of you|||if you are a sprinter in breastroke...usually 50 or 100 breastroke...(50 is two laps 100 is four)if you are a sprinter then you want to try to keep your glide short...so basicly a good drill for this would be freestyle kick breastroke arms and when your swimming try to keep up with your feet...i know its impossible but having this state of mind will have your arms moving faster...if you are doing a 200 then you want to really stretch out your glide so hold it for about 2 seconds. a good drill for this would be 3 kicks 1 pull and strealined during your kicks.|||So that you can keep your head down, and pull your self out of the water to breath, try placing a tennis ball under your chin for about 2 laps, and try to keep it there while you swim, so that you are pulling yourself out of the water to breathe, and not just bobbing your head.

Another one is a combination of butterfly and breast stroke. You do breast stroke pulls, and butterfly kicks, to ensure fluidity, and wave like motion in the water.

Hope this helps!
