200 breaststroke and 100 butterfly help?

I am a 14 year old boy. My 50 breast time is a 31.18. What should my 200 breast time be around? What should my technique be (because i am more of a sprinter)? Any tips on gliding? Also i have to swim 100 butterfly. My 50 fly time is a 34.30 (i know it sucks). What should my 100 fly time be around? What should my technique be? Thanks for all of the help!|||It is far too difficult to extrapolate your 200 time from a 50 time.

Another reply gave you incredible WRONG information on how to swim a 200. The guide to all of your races should be that at no point in your race should you be going faster than you can go for the remainder of the race.

If you think about that, that means that in a 500 you don't start off with your lifetime best 50 because you can't hold that time for the remainder of the race. How about a 100 fly? Well, if you sprint the first 25 since you can't hold that time for the remainder of the race so you must start of slow. Then as the race gets shorter and shorter, you go faster and faster because you can hold that speed for a lesser and lesser distance. That means that your third 50 on a 200 breast IS NOT the fastest, but it is almost as fast as your last 50 of a 200. Also, your first 50 is the slowest.

The same is true for a100 fly. Your first 25 is the slowest and your last 25 is the fastest. You actually need to make the first 25 of your 100 fly (or 50 in your 200 breast) feel so slow that if you went any slower, you'd stop. BUT, if you don't speed up as you go, your swim will be really slow.

On your fly, you must also start to breathe immediately after the breakout from your start. DO NOT hold your breath until the end of your race. YOU MUST START TO BREATHE IMMEDIATELY.|||Hmm, you are obviously a breaststroker because that's pretty fast for 14. How I swim the 200 breast goes like this:

1st 50- long smooth strokes

2nd 50- faster, more efficient strokes; build all the way up to a sprint

3rd 50- strong powerful strokes; all out fast (IMPORTANT! dont wait for the last 50 to go fast! swim

the 3rd 50 like it's the last one!)

4th 50- just give it all you have left! (and it shouldn't be much) your legs should be dead right now (don't focus on gliding so much, just finish the race!)

You should be holding around 35s if you 50 is a 31, so your final time should be about 2:33. (:

And the 100 fly? Umm, i'm pretty much the worst butterflyer on thhis planet, so I don't think you need my advice. Haha the 100 and 200 fly is pretty much hell for me.

Hope this helps! :D

Breaststroke make your breasts smaller? and do any swimming strokes?

i was wondering if breast stroke or any other swimming strokes make your breasts smaller or your butt smaller?|||Breasts are nothing more than fatty tissue with pectoral muscle underneath. You can tone your pectoral muscles if you want and you will lose body fat from swimming but there's no such thing as targeted fat loss. No stroke will specifically target the fatty tissue in your breasts and make them smaller. Same goes for your butt.

A lot of female athletes like Olympic swimmers, gymnasts, and bodybuilders have little to no breasts. Bodybuilders appear small-chested due to low fat low carb high protein diets and because they use weights to tone and build up their pectoral muscles. Female swimmers lift weights, do pilates, yoga, maintain low body fat with plenty of workouts, and do resistance training. All of that *can* affect body fat and build and tone pectorals.|||there is a possibility. often when women excercise the breasts are the first thing to get smaller. However just because you swim laps doesnt mean your breasts will get smaller. you look at olympians and they have no breasts because they excercise like mad and eat certain things to keep them in the best shape possible. Swimming is the best thing for you so dont let the fear of having no breats stop you.|||Because the pectoral muscles (chest) are actually built up by swimming, it stands to reason that swimming can perk up the breasts. In my years of high school and college swimming, I have never heard that swimming could make a woman's chest smaller. So, no worries.|||No, that is not true. Swimming Breaststroke makes your breasts larger. The muscle grows in you breasts and they are more perky and better shaped!

Is breaststroke actually good exercise?

I just did 35 lengths of the pool but I only did breaststroke. I dont really like front crawl because I find it harder to get into a good breathing pattern. Would breaststroke actually improve my fitness?

Thnx|||Swimming in general is a very good form of exercise and all the strokes improve fitness.

If breaststroke is your preferred stroke then stick with what you like.|||swimming is one of the best sport you can do as it works all the main muscles. it doesn't matter what stroke you do it will still help with your fitness.|||any stroke is good exercise, but if you only use one stroke, you will begin to develop a limited set of muscles.|||if u wat really good exercise learn the B-fly if u can

but the breaststroke is fine too

Reasonable goal for the 100 breaststroke?

I am 15 years old and a sophomore in high school. I go a 1:03.4 in 100 breaststroke, but by this time 2 years from now i want to go at least a 59.4. Does this sound like a reasonable goal?|||It's reasonable and doable. Though if you don't work you can stay the same. One advantage you have is that you should be getting stronger and bigger which will help you swim faster.

Two other points to think about:

1. The faster you go, the more resistance. So dropping 4 seconds from a 1:07 to a 1:03 is not as hard as dropping the four you want to go. The physics of swimming a 59 mean that you will be encountering a lot more resistance so you have to be stronger...and have better strokes.

2. There is a difference between the starts, turns and strokes of someone swimming a 1:03...and someone swimming a 59. So keep working on your strokes, turns and racing technique. The sub minute breaststrokers I coached had much better details to their strokes than the slower ones. And as a rule, they worked harder.

One final point...a 59 is a heck of a good time...but you might want to set a higher goal. A 57 or 56 will get you into a lot more colleges and with good coaching, hard work and some natural talent it's probably possible. Good luck.|||That's awesome! I think that is a somewhat reasonable goal but you are going to have to train really hard! Just don't give up on it and make sure that you keep positive thoughts about it! A lot of how you do is based of your mental strength!!! Good luck!|||This is a reasonable goal as long as you keep practicing. Last shortcourse season I dropped over 5 seconds so you should be able to drop 4 seconds in two years.

good luck(:

Lifeguard but I only know breaststroke?

I want to train as a lifeguard but I only know breaststroke? Will the American Red Cross training teach me? Or will I need to take extra lessons first? Thanks so much for your help.|||The Red Cross won't teach you during your training. Luckily, you won't have to swim freestyle for a very long period of time. When I was certified last year, you really only needed to swim freestyle for an approach to a "drowning" victim. You were allowed to do any stroke of your choosing for the 500y swim and the brick test.

You should really learn some type of front crawl if your seriously considering becoming a lifeguard. It's a lot more efficient, and if (God forbid) your in a position where someone's life is in danger, you want to be there as soon as possible. The good news is, a lot of people find freestyle a lot easier to master than breaststroke. If your trouble is keeping your face in the water for a long period of time, you should really work on that before you think about putting yourself in a situation where you are responsible for others lives.|||yes you to learn to swim freestyle. it is the basic. anyway if you already knew how to swim breaststroke then it will be easy for you to learn the freestyle stroke.|||you would prob have to learn freestyle on your own because it is listed under the preskills

Is it possible for me to drop 13 seconds on breaststroke if I swimming club and on my schools swim?

I swim a 1:13.06|||HUH?! How about using REAL English?

Now, if you're asking if it is possible to drop 13 seconds in the 100 breaststroke the answer is, yes. Every swimmer who goes 13 seconds faster than you had to have dropped 13 seconds.

The better question is, is such a drop probable? That depends on the quality of your stroke mechanics; how hard do you work; are you physically capable of going that fast; are you really motivated and; how many miles per day are you willing to swim to prepare?

One thing to remember is that the drop from 1:13 to 1:04 is MUCH easier than the drop from 1:04 to 1:01 and the drop from 1:01 to 1:00 is even more difficult. In other words, the faster you go the more difficult it is to go fast.

In high school, there are only 15 girls who have ever been under 1:01. Last year there were about 100 high school aged boys in the entire country at that speed.

Good luck|||stick to one team for better consistency

How can you go fast in breaststroke?

i've been swimming for 6 years and no matter how hard i try i can't get any faster at breaststroke! have any advice?|||well i swim high 34's for long course 50 breast and i am 13. but its the timing of the pull and the kick that will make your time decrease and when you breathe push your head forward to get that extra bit further. also make sure you are pulling out correctly off the dive.|||have a fast recovery and long fast underwater pulls , also try to time your kick so that it matches when you go into the end of the stroke to get the most out of it.|||work a lot on ur stroke and kick and the glide.

How do I do the wave style breaststroke?

There are two styles of insweep scull in breastroke.

The wave style uses the hands and forearms as "windshield wiper blades" using the hands and forearms together.

The flat style uses the hands to scoop out the inside of a large bowl. Remember three things, you must be able to see the hands in front of you, the elbows never touch the body or chest, and hand speed is critical to get into the streamline.

Once you have swept out into a V with your arms, swing your thumbs in like windshield wipers. This is where you need to be lifting your BODY to breathe while still making forward progress. Do not lift your head. Instead, make sure you are looking down in front of you. Once you swing your thumbs in and get your breath, kick your hands forward and glide. Think of it as "breathe-kick-glide."|||breast stroke is one of m yfavorite strokes and my 2nd best but my best is butterfly|||I don't know but I was doing the breaststroke with my lady for a couple hours this morning and judging by her moans and groans I was doing it perfectly! BOO YEAH!

Would you call me a breaststroke or a backstroker?

I go a 1:03 (which i have done IN PRACTICE before) in my 100 back and I have a 1:10 (which i have also swam in practice before) for my 100 breast

My 200 back time is a 2:18 and my 200 breast time is a 2:31|||I would say breaststroke because that is the slowest stroke and your back and breast times a pretty close!

I personally hate breaststroke I'd much rather swim fly!|||I agree with breaststroke. While your back is certainly not slow by any means. I think your breast is definitely something great. How old are you? In Canada Im positive that breaststroke time (100 maybe 200) is like 16 boys nationals!! I could be wrong seeing as that I am a 14 girl. But 2 of my best guy friends have breast nationals, and the other back. So stick with breast. Definitely amazing times.|||i agree because the breast stroke is typically a slower stroke and your time in it is that close to your back stroke it def makes you a breast stroker|||breaststroke

Should you propel yourself through the water whilst doing breaststroke?

when you kick should you assume the pray position and propel yourself through the water then move your arms to raise your head above the water to get a breath of air? Im just learning and do not do this, instead i just continously keep moving my arms if that maks sense? Surely once you propel yourself through the water the pressure from having your head under will make it difficult on the lungs? regards|||While you're doing the frog kick, you should be bringing your arms out from the pray position to either side AND coming up for your breath of air, and that combined action will propel you forward. When that's complete, your head will go back down in the water, your legs will be relaxed, and your arms will return to the pray position. Good luck with your swimming.

Does anyone know how to improve time on a breaststroke and backstroke?

Take one thing at a time, don't try and work on everything at once.

Back:

-Work that underwater dolphin kick - any time you do a kicking set or have to kick in warm up, work those walls and go as far as you can (tight streamline). Fast feet (and don't forget to have a nice fast kick while swimming, too)... sometimes swimmers neglect the kick.

-On the pull, grab deep water - it's sooo important - keep your head still. Do this drill ---%26gt; three pulls and 6 kicks (and repeat) - keep your head straight up at all times - don't look toward your chest and do not put your head back too far.

-Work on a killer finish. Since you can't see where you are going on backstroke, the finish can be kind of a pain in the butt... give it some time and practice it as much as you can. Don't forget that teeny dolphin kick to help you finish to the wall.

Breast:

-Fast hands! After you have pulled yourself out of the water (during the stroke), thrust your hands forward as fast as you can - and to get yourself into streamline... this is so important. You are gliding on breastroke - and during your kick, you need to be streamlined as much as you possibly can so you can go faster. Do this drill ---%26gt; dolphin kick instead of kicking breast, it will let you focus on the pull more (in my opinion).

-Work on the new dolphin kick during your underwater pullout (it's a recent rule change - and it's awesome). It will take you a while to get this down, but it will certainly help. You can have one dolphin kick (it should be small) after you take your first breast kick underwater). Go to YouTube, look for the recent meets (like World Championships)... it should have some good footage of the underwater pullout.

Have fun!|||everyday do at least fifty full military type pushups with your hands to gether fingers pointingINWARD AND TOUCHING this will stretch your shoulders and strengthen your lats and eventually cause more strenght and stamina for faster times|||Speedo makes a backstroke high neck body skin|||well i have a few tips that really helped mine. i dont know how experienced you are, so you might already know these but...

-keep your finger together

-for breaststroke you should never be in a x postion.

- for back stroke you should never be flat one of your shoulders should always be up.

-hope it helped|||all i do when i am struggeling to improve times in every strog is make more of an effort to do strength work in the gym. that means liek weights and pushups other stuff liek that. the stronger u are usually u get faster at swimming too because u can endure more.|||IMer has stated some really useful tips. I hate backstroke, so I picked up something there.. deep water.. hmmm after all these years of pitching and yawing..... and the new dolphin kick for the breastrioke turns ~ (about time too... we were all doing that anyway if we could get away with it)........ great advice.

I vote for her.|||Interval training:

Kinesthetic memory positioning exercises:

http://www.swim.ee/videos/exercises.html鈥?/a>

Changing the pitch of your stroke positions/technique. An example would be during freestyle and back they've found that early entry (hand enters the water earlier than what is normally taught) creates faster times.

Pitch may not sound like much but if you manage to shave even a second off your time it matters. You'll want to work on your starts and turns and finishes because a lot of people tend to lose momentum (speed), and I've never met anyone who was good at all three.

Believe it or not, not everyone is made for certain strokes. There's actually a test to find your range of motion to prevent injuries and a lot of it affects pitch and angle of entry or angle of movements in the stroke cycle.|||for a better time in those swimming strokes, avoid splashing too much water, that way you avoid unnecessary movements that just waste precious seconds from your time.

make your movements precise...and put rhythm into your movements..

try it! it will really improve your time.

What is an average time for a 50yd breaststroke?

not that good with yards but it depends whether we are talking about man or women / short or long pool.. but the bets times are around 30 sec for 50m... hope it helps|||well i think mine is like 38 seconde|||what age?

College average is about 29sec|||ha nice lie ich_liebe_du you would be world class. Anyways, an average time all depends on what type of swimmer you are if you are a grreat inm shape year round swimmer and your main stroke is breaststroke, then your average time is going to be much lower than a summer swimmer than has a O.K. breaststroke but swim s for the fun of it. If you are the first person your average will be in the ball-park or 33-37, if you are the second person it could be 40-55 seconds.|||i swim in meters but my time is 28 seconds....idk if u can turn that into yrd....|||i am 12 and go a 35.4 and have been swimming for 2 years all year round

What is a breaststroke whipkick?

I posted a similar question earlier but I decided I'd be nice and give another user a chance to earn 10 pts ;-)

Can anyone explain how I'm suppose to kick narrow while doing it in a round whipkick?

Links to videos and pictures from another website would help.|||here is a article belowhttp://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/articles/swimmagazine/articles/199503-01swim_art.asp

or this article with a video

http://www.goswim.tv/drilloftheweek_comments.php?id=2796_0_20_0_C#|||Yes, the first rule of breaststroke kick is to try to kick as narrow as possible, a breaststroke whipkick, is just a long narrow kick where u "whip" ur legs together and squeeze in order to go the furthest distance. Other people just think of a whipkick as a great kick that gets u far. I hope i helped!|||Just keep your knees as close together as possible, but without touching when you kick. Whip your legs as hard as you can and keep your streamline tight. Make sure to point your toes. It isn't a full whip kick until your toes touch.

Is Michael Phelps a butterflier or breaststroke swimmer?

he's most definately a butterflyer and breast is his weakest but he's still really good at it.|||MIchael Phelps is both. He should be, because it's like a soccer player. They have to use both feet, but swimmers they have to be good at all of the strokes to be a good swimmer.|||Out of those two options, he's a butterflyer.

He also swims free and a lot of IMs.

Michael Phelps is just good at everything. :D|||are you a sped? you obviously dont even swim so why are you in here? butterfly..duh.|||Fly. der. why would you ask this question if you don't even know his stroke?

Is Breaststroke really the hardest stroke?

What's a solid time for 50 meters, when you're 13?|||i'm a breaststroker too, so under :40 is really great if you're only 13.

i personally don't think it's the hardest stroke, but that's because i've been doing it since i started swimming four years ago, i'm 15 now.

my brother and his friend only just started swimming and they think it's the hardest. personally i think fly is the hardest.|||that is wat i go! breaststroke is one of the hardest strokes, it requires good timing and a lot of strength and endurance. most people thing that fly is but more people cant swim breaststroke than fly.|||Under 40 is good and I'm 13. I'm a breaststroker and I think butterfly and backstroke are the hardest for me personally it all depends on what you think is the hardest.|||no, butterfly is harder, but breastroke is hard.

a solid time for 50 yards at 13 is 32.00.

im sure that meters would have to be somewhat higher than that because meters is more.|||breaststroke is the slowest stroke but whether it's the hardest stroke depends on your opinion. Some people find some strokes higher than others. A solid time for 50m for a 13 year old is about 52-53 seconds ish.|||Breastroke, I think its the most fun stroke but is hard. Also, if you go under 40 thats pretty good.|||no. fly is hardest. but breast may be hard if you're not a flyer. but generally fly is hardest.|||Thats good

Is swimming breaststroke bad for arthritic knees?

The most common cause of knee problems associated with the breastroke is an improper kick. People want to do a 'frog kick' where the knees come out quite wide. Not only can that be bad for the knees, it can also injure the hips.

The proper breastroke kick is a 'whip kick' with the legs held somewhat relaxed and the feet/ankles leading the kick. The knees should not be tensed. The effect of the kick comes mostly from the area below the knees, though the force originates in the large muscles of the upper legs. It's a lot easier to see than to explain: get someone who really knows to show you the proper breastroke kick.

Swimming of all sorts is generally an exceptionally good exercise for persons with arthritis. I have seen several instances of persons improving their arthritis dramatically with regular swim exercise. One woman in particular who swam at a pool I managed in Northern California went from barely being able to get in/out of the pool to the Senior Olympics in less than 3 years, and gained significant mobility out-of-water during that time as well.

Keep it up, just do it right! Best of luck to you.|||swimming and i mean all forms of it...is the best exercise for arthriric joints... gives you adequait exertion without putting weight on your joints...|||I don't think it would be as there would be no strain on the joints due to being in the water and it isn't a load bearing activity. I have a fibromyalgia and it affects my joints and I find that swimming Is a very good exercise as there is no pressure on my joints at all and swimming is a good gentle exercise to do.|||No I have Arthritis and i swim twice a week for an hour. I always do breaststroke I find it is beneficial as you are not putting weight on your joints. Swimming gives a gentle excercise I find it does me good.|||YES, it definitely can be. I'm only 20 but I have an tracking disorder in my knees that's caused much of my cartilage to wear away after being a breaststroker for 12 years through college swimming. If you're already missing cartilage, it may cause the bones to rub against each other which brings pain, swelling, and possibly additional cartilage loss.

If you've tried it before and it doesn't create any pain, you should be okay. However, your best bet would be to stick to freestyle kicking which is much easier on the knees and can stabilize the joint by strengthening the quad and the IT band down the side of the leg.

Additionally, if you're seeing a doctor for your arthritis, he may be able to recommend other exercises that can enhance joint functioning.

I do not put my head under the wwater during breaststroke?

how do I do this without getting water up my nose and in my ears. Can I still get a good workout without putting my head under the water? regards good people|||Well, you exercise your Cardiovascular endurance by going underwater and holding your breath, but if you don't put your head underwater that just works your muscles pretty much. If you want to attempt to go underwater, the key to not getting water up your nose is breathing (and by breathing I mean blowing air out) out of your nose while under the water a little bit at a time. As for your ears... I don't know... Hopes this helps|||just put your head in the water? i think you get dqd anyway if its not at least half way inn.|||A nose clip or get tutoring from a qualified swimming coach to help pur your head under the water of use a snorkle!|||You can use earplugs and a nose clip and mouth breath.|||Okay ive like only just learnt to swim lol and what you should do is put

your head in i mean i put my ears in the bath wen i was my hair

and my lil sis dose just dont breath and keep bringing your head out

after abiut 6 seconds :D It wont hurt you my 9 year old sis opens her

eyes under water . EVEN I CARNT LOLLOLLOLLL!!!!|||Yes you can get a good work out by not putting your head underwater.

However if you are swimming in a meet etc. you have you have to put your head underwater!

Usually you don't notice water in your ears but if you get swimmers ear often you could always invest in ear plugs or swimmers ear drops for after you swim.

As far as getting it up your nose goes, blow out through your nose while your underwater and inhale through your mouth while you are above water. This is how it is correctly swam and makes a big difference

GOOD LUCK

How to swim fast using breaststroke (also known as frog style)?

Have to swim 100m without stopping, within 4 minutes|||4 minutes is enough time for a 400 breast if you put some effort into it! Here are some tips to increase your speed:

1. maintain and practice your rhythm. Sometimes a song or beat in your head can help you maintain your rhythm. Whateve ryou do do not lose this rhythm or you'll slow down!

2. Glide. Use all of your stroke as efficiently as possible and make sure you are gliding until you feel yourself begining to slow. Then take another stroke. The glide can be an important factor between winning and losing a race and the same principle applies to racing against the clock.

3. Use your kick, remember the snap. Make sure you are taking a wide kick with a hard snap that brings the legs the entire distance around and together. Alot of people have a short kick that causes them to lose a lot of power.

4. Breathe when you need too but not too often. Try breathing every 2 strokes and see how you feel. Taking a breath wastes energy so you want to do this as little as possible without slowing down.

Good luck!|||well, i would do daily running because that helps build ur leg muscles a lot. (run about 3-4 miles) (it helps trust me!)

well, when you are on your 100m race. what ever you do. dont get beaten by the guy next to you that is faster. NEVER. this way you will be forced to keep up with them and there fore bringing you up the standards

when you swim, have a nice strong kick the whole way

(remember, this is only a 100m race.) keep you rhythm nice and strong and fast. keep a good pace, dont start out too strong so that u will have no energy in the end. try going fast the first lap but have enough energy to go even faster on the second lap..

While you take these strong strokes, make sure that you glide, it helps plus you dont waste you enegy.

I hope this helps|||PRACTICE

its always all about practice. 4 minutes is PLENTY of time to swim 100m. work on your stroke/technique, your kick, your pulldowns, and your turns. make sure you are doing the stroke properly. if you are, i dont see how you wouldn't be able to finish without stopping.|||difficult with breast stroke, however u can try long distance underwater sessions along with breast stroke for faster swim...|||well, i am a compitive swimmer and i love breast stoke. 4 mins is enough to do a 200 or 400, but a 100 m. you can do under 2 mins EASY. you didnt say if you swim much but it is simple. here are some notes you can use that i use.

1. maintain and practice your rhythm. sometimes a song or beat in your head can help you maintain your rhythm. Whatever you do do not lose this rhythm or you'll slow down! use a fast beat rhythm.

2. Glide. Use all of your stroke as efficiently as possible and make sure you are gliding until you feel yourself begining to slow. When doing long distance dont slow your glide down, keep it the same speed. count in your head with the 100 m. I count 1, then 2. so you get the nesary glide you need.

The longer the better, and make your legs longer and fast.

4. Breathe when you need too but not too often. Try breathing every 2 strokes and see how you feel. Taking a breath wastes energy so you want to do this as little as possible without slowing down. Enless your technique is differnt, like my stoke you must bring your head up so you breath, sometimes you can be DQed for staying under for 2 stokes so come up but dont breath just move your head a bit and your arms to propel forward.

5. Last, remember a count or rhythm, Glide!, breathing technique, fast, quick long kick, and have fun. The 100m is very easy and if it is in a 25 or 50m. poo learn to do fast turns. Do you know how to do a pull out, or a open turn? If you need to use them, if you are in a 25 or 50m. pool. The turn and pull out is the escial part!

6. When you first dive in 1.glide count 1,2,3

2. pull your arms done 1,2

3. kick count 1, 2 and you should be on the surface and then you swim!

the turn is a two hand turn, just remember that and if you need to do it ask a compitive swimmer or the reason you are doing the 100m.

Have fun with it! i know i would!

Good luck!|||Swimming is my favorite sport and breastroke is my favorite event. When pulling with your arms, try to have a medium wide stroke, and pick up your turn over rate. The faster you pull the faster you will go. Make sure you get a good glide that way you don't get tired as fast. Whenever you are kicking, make sure that your legs touch each other before and after each kick. Hope this helps!|||Um, well i hate to bring u down, but 100m without stopping isnt that hard! Im not trying to come across mean, i just want to bring that point forward. I was a swimmer for 5 years, and my sister has been swimming for 3 years. She is the top swimmer in the state and is ranked withing the top 10 in the country. Being only 10 years old she has tremedous dedication. She practices everyday, 6 days a week, for about 2 hours. I would suggest practicing like u never practiced before. Everyday, even for a short amount of time, get in the pool and swim.

In breast, its all about the legs...that means kick! Work on your leg muscels. The second thing, besides arms, is the turn, work on a quick, touch-and-go at the wall. good luck!

P.S- my sisters time is a 125.32, and mine is a 134.67! dont give up, u'll get it!!!|||keep your head down and pull as hard as you can with your arms with your hands cupped!|||Breaststroke is the slowest of the four official styles in competitive swimming. The fastest breaststroke swimmers can swim about 1.67 meters per second.

Breaststroke is swum while leaning on the chest, with the arms only breaking the surface of the water slightly and legs always underwater, while the head is underwater for the second half of the stroke. The kick is sometimes referred to as a "frog kick" because of the resemblance to a frog's kick. The body is often at a steep angle to the forward movement. This slows down the swimmer more than any other style.

A special feature of competitive breaststroke is the underwater pullout. From the streamline position, one uses the arms to pull all the way down past the hips. As the arms are pulling down, one downward dolphin kick is allowed, though still optional. This is followed by the recovery of the arms to the streamline position once more, and then a kick. The pullout at the start and after the turns contributes significantly to the swimming times. Therefore one way to improve the swimming times is to focus on the start and the turns.

Are whipkick more efficient when doing breaststroke?

So I have been swimming the breaststroke lately and people have told me I've been doing the kick wrongly. I have been doing the 'frog-kick' where my knees are not stationary(open and close).

So I eventually switched to whip kick(focusing on keeping the knees close together and just whipping the outward pointing feet together). However, after like a month of doing the whip kick,I still find it slower than the wrong "frog-kick".

Why is this so?Am I doing the whip kick wrongly?Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks! :)|||Not only is frog kick slower, it is illegal in competition. Your knees are not allowed to be wider than your feet during the kick.

Focus on the main "pulling surfaces" of your kick. While your feet are circling around, focus on pushing the water with the area from your big toe down to your arch. When your feet have reached the widest point, focus bringing both legs together.

One of the common problems people have with whip kick is drawing the knees up toward the chest. Instead, lift the soles of your feet up toward the surface.

Hang in there -- you'll get it eventually.|||The whip kick is designed to be faster. When i used to swim freestyle i would bicycle kick on my breath and my coach told me to change it and when i did i felt slow but now i don't do that anymore and i am much faster. Same thing here. The frog kick takes more time to execute and creates more drag. The Whip kick you have less drag and you can kick faster just keep working and practicing with it and you'll get faster.

What's state qualifying time for 100 breaststroke in iowa?

I swim a 1:14, I'm a junior at a fairly bad swimming school and my goal is to make it to state and swim in college, I have a certain college in mind that's not very good that I think I can make it at. Think I can do it? anyone?|||normally you need a division of your school to figure it out. Sorry

What muscles are worked doing breaststroke swimming?

i did competitve swimming for eleven years :)

all of your upper muscles are worked, and your calves, and your ankles and toes even get a workout!

swimming is THE best sport, it works every muscle in your body within all the 4 strokes so keep it up!|||Pretty much all providing you are doing it properly taking your head under and not just holding it above the surface.|||pecs, lats, triceps, biceps, back extensors and all of the leg muscles|||almost every muscle in your body. swimming is the best exercise you could do.|||Bi-ceps|||arms legs, abdominals and bum|||titties|||a lot! your lungs, arms, chest mostly

What are some good drills to improve myself in breaststroke alot?

it was my first year swimming and im pretty good at breast but i want to get a lot faster but i need some drills to get me a lot faster for next season|||Because breastroke is so complicated you should first break it down into smaller components. For the kick obviously use a kickboard; to work on the pull alone, kick butterfly.

Pull: You need to make sure you're keeping your elbows *up* instead of sliding them back when you pull. Visualize yourself "reaching over a barrel." This will ensure that you're using you entire forearm to grip the water and pull instead of just your hands and wrists.

Kick: Breastroke kicking always has two parts; first you bring your feet up to your butt, *then* you turn out your ankles and kick back. Most people spread their ankles out way too early. Try doing "inchworm drill" w/ a kickboard- just bring your feet up to your butt, keeping them pretty close together, then back down. (In other words don't kick out in this drill). Next try kicking w/ a pullbuoy (it's extremely hard at first!) to ensure that you don't let your legs go too wide. It actually saps your energy, wastes time and is less explosive than a narrow kick, plus you may get knee injuries. You want your ankles to go out wide but *not* your knees. Trust me on this! Then you fire back hard...

Turn: This is important, it will shave *seconds* of a 100. You should never, never pull yourself up on the wall when you do a turn, nor should you treat a turn as a pausing point for breath. You will lose a ton of time. Practice your turn against a flat wall where there is no gutter at all to grab onto. My coach managed to cut off our gutter by sticking kickboards against them; but if you can't do it in a pool, practice the motions against a normal wall. In the turn you just have to touch and go, lightning fast.|||Use a kickboard and work on ur leg kick. Go down the pool doin 1 pull and 2 or 3 kicks. Work underwater and practice ur keyhole and ur turns. Make sure u push with ur legs and then glideeeeeeee. The glide is the fastest part of ur stroke. Work on ur dive and the length u get on it. Count how many breststroke strokes it takes to get down the pool, and try and reduce it everytime. Try doin the leg kick on ur back, wif no backstroke arms. Just keep practisin and training regularly and ur times will improve and push yourself every session.

Hope this helps and good luck!|||i have been swimming for 6 years and the drills that my coach always had me do for breaststroke is to kick three times, then stroke twice, then repeat down the pool. it might sound sort of stupid but trust me, it really works!!!|||do one arm at a time. so 25 yds right hand, (still pulling the same way and still kicking both legs) then 25 yds left arm.

stick the arm that you're not using strait in front of you|||if you are a sprinter in breastroke...usually 50 or 100 breastroke...(50 is two laps 100 is four)if you are a sprinter then you want to try to keep your glide short...so basicly a good drill for this would be freestyle kick breastroke arms and when your swimming try to keep up with your feet...i know its impossible but having this state of mind will have your arms moving faster...if you are doing a 200 then you want to really stretch out your glide so hold it for about 2 seconds. a good drill for this would be 3 kicks 1 pull and strealined during your kicks.|||So that you can keep your head down, and pull your self out of the water to breath, try placing a tennis ball under your chin for about 2 laps, and try to keep it there while you swim, so that you are pulling yourself out of the water to breathe, and not just bobbing your head.

Another one is a combination of butterfly and breast stroke. You do breast stroke pulls, and butterfly kicks, to ensure fluidity, and wave like motion in the water.

Hope this helps!

What kind of workouts/sets can i do during winter break to improve my breaststroke time?

kicking breaststroke using a kick borad and also do this thing called skull it is when u do the breaststroke pull with ur arms in the water and u are just floating|||y would you be lucky to have a winter break!! i wish i didnt. but uhm, 3..2..1 drill, where you take a stroke and hold it for 3 sec then another 2 sec then another 1 sec then repeat...or pull out drill is hwere u just do pullouts across one lap...or double kick breaststroke|||you're so lucky you get a break from swimming during winter break, i have hell week on my swim team

My advice is get in the pool and work on technique also work on your shoulder muscles by lifting weights|||will do like 500. or do one day breaststroke. Im 12 years old and i have a 35 sec time wbu

What are some good breaststroke stretches ?

helpp!|||Stand with your legs in a "V" and shift your weight to one side while keeping your feet on the ground. Shift to both sides. Its the one I always do before my races. Standing on one foot and pulling the other back is good too. Also standing at the side of the pool with your toes on the edge and ease yourself down until you can feel a stretch. Hold on to something though because we had a guy on our team fall in doing that one. Lol ;)|||do the butterfly stretch, it feels so good a stretches like hip or thigh muscles or something. My coach also said that the partners stretch is good. That is where you(standing up) put your out stretched arms on your partner's shoulders, look down, and push down on their shoulders while they do the same to you at the same time. Good luck and happy stretching!!!!

Why is the breaststroke called that?

I just thought it was a bit of an odd choice of words to name a swimming technique after a favourite pasttime of lesbians.

Seriously though, I'm interested: why is it called that?|||Well a stroke isn't always a physical stroke of something it can also be used to describe movement- the stroke of a clock for example :) and 'breast' stroke is as, unlike other swimming techniques, the stroke of the arms is an outwards movement from the chest or 'breast'

bit suggestive though ;)

How can i make my breaststroke better?

i have a big meet this week and i want to get anational cut, how can i imporve my turns and stroke...and maybe my mental preparation?|||COMPLETELY finish your leg stroke.

people focus on their hands, but your legs need to touch.

i tell people to "snap" their leg together. finish it. don't leave them separated.

i promise it will help.

also, keep your head still. don't move it.

:]

hope it helped.|||your kick needs to be perfect and maybe move your back into a possition with most thrust, not resistance. go faster dont pump your self and exuasht lol just go with a smooth fast pace and with your mind just keep and thinking your a frog swiming in a jungle pond and it will feel comic book like and wen you lift your head make sure your shoulders are in the water

What exercizes can improve my breaststroke time.?

I wanna be a better breaststroker.|||Stretching your arms and legs with these yoga-like positions I use in my pool.

1.In the water, cross your arms in front of you(you can be standing or sitting. Then bring them out of the water as you are uncrossing them. They will be straight up.

stretch your arms up as high as you can.Your hands and arms will tighten.

Hold for 15.

Slowly bring both arms down to your sides, stopping at 5 different places and holding for 5.It should look like you are unfolding a fan.

Let your arms slowly fall into the water, cross each other and start again.

2.raise your shoulders, pushing them back, down and back to the front.

Legs-make your ankles strong. While sitting, bring your foot back, hold for 10.Then do the other foot.

Whats the difference between the breaststroke and the crawlstroke in swimming?

Breaststroke is much slower; you put both hands in front of you and then pull yourself forward by moving your arms back to your sides while doing a frog kick with your legs. With a front crawl you alternately throw each arm over your head and pull yourself forward by pulling your arm towards your body while doing a scissor kick with your legs.|||There's no such thing as 'crawlstroke', it's called Front Crawl and the difference is that in breast stroke both arms (in synch) form an inward keyhole shaped motion into the chest (breast; hence the name) and in front crawl one arm moves directly forward while the other treds water back. Legwise you kick both legs out the way in breaststroke and in front crawl your legs kick up and down at different times very quickly.

Two completely different strokes.|||The breaststroke is like a frog swim. The crawlstroke is more of the more traditional ways to swim. You're on your front and moving your arms forward like a windmill.|||breaststroke is slow but u can keep your energy by swimming in this way.

crawlstroke is the fastest way to swim.

Im adding some swimming into my workout but can only do breaststroke well?

If i swim breaststroke for 45 mins or so a session will it prove to be good cardio? Also what muscles does breaststroke use and develop? regards|||well i would consider that long of a swim would be pretty decent cardio exercise. swimming breast stroke would build up the legs, biceps, most likely your back/stomache depending on how high you lift your head/chest out of the water.

if you want to build specific muscles i know that butterfly stroke (is very easy to learn harder to swim long and properly) will work your shoulders, back, core, and leg muscles really well considering it is a power stroke|||breast stroke uses your arms, legs and abs. and it will develop these a lot more.

What is a Good Time For a 50 Breaststroke?

I am a 14 year old girl i am on my high school's swim team i am not that good of a swimmer, but i do not want to come in last for the meets so what times should i think to see|||im 12 and i go a 31 high without tapering or a fastskin. im a guy but im gonna say a 33-34 is a good time with tapering|||well im 14 and some of the best girls on our team swim it in 30 seconds, but theyve been swimming for a while. i swim it in 37 and im a little above average for our team. id say the average time on my team is 40-42.|||The IHSA girls state qualifying time for 100 breaststroke is 1:08.49. I'd say 36 seconds is pretty good for regular season meets.|||i go a 26 and im a breastroke/imer... so maybe a 32 is good for decent swimmers|||id say about 38-42would be a pretty good time

How to get my breaststroke time down?

Im a freshmen in high school and my 100 breaststroke time is a 1:22.34 that's my fastest

( i know it's not the best but i haven't been swimming long) my 50 is a 35.00

how can i get these times down should i stroke more or work on the glide

any drills that can help|||your endurance can be fixed but you just need to keep swimming more and eventually you'll get better.|||You can improve your time %26amp; speed in breast stroke ...by getting her bra off quicker. A good practice drill can be done by placing a bra around a chair and gliding your hand around to the back to pop the fastener on the bra in record time. Getting the bra removed in as quick a time as possible will enable you to get immediately into breast stroking.

HAVE FUN....%26amp; remember... always use condoms!|||Work with the timing of your strokes. Work on gliding, count your strokes. Power stroke in the breaststroke is the kick. Work on that as well.|||I REALLY hope Sunny knows that that's not what you're asking...

Anyway, I would work more on technique, and then you can take much faster strokes. Also, be careful not to wait too far for the glide part, but don't immediately go into the next stroke after you've finished your first one.

I hope this helps a bit...|||make sure that your feet touch when finishing the kick, that last bit is where you get the most push

when using you arms you are not suppose to do a huge stroke. at no point should yours arms be past your shoulders

Help To Almost Sprint the 100 and 200 Breaststroke?

How can I get my technique in breaststroke better?

I'm a ver y good breaststroke for my height 5' 2 1/2" and i go about a 116 scy 100 breaststroke. my kick is always good for breaststroke(lots of good kick and the oomph) but my arms get tired easily so i cant "sprint" them. I workout and i am really strong for a full asian. (12 years old) how can i improve my stroke and get stronger?|||I have the same exact problem as you. My arms just die after the third lap. I suggest doing distance breaststroke in practice and try and sprint them. The more you do it the easier it will be to keep your endurance in a race.

Which muscle groups does swimming the breaststroke exercise?

I've been guessing it will do something to my chest? Thank you : )|||Swimming is one of THE best things to do. You are working your full body, alot of chest too! If you are wanting to "build" your chest, try push ups as well. Swimming is excellent, as you are working against resistance, push ups will help develop those muscles as well.|||swimming exercises most of the muscle groups and burns fat from all across the body it mainly works the arms and chest though|||Breaststroke? It exercises mostly your leg muscles, particularly your adductors (muscles of the inner thigh that pull your legs together), not the arms and chest.

Is it cheating to say you swam a mile when you did it using breaststroke?

Breaststroke is a swimming stoke, and you swim it. Therefore you swam a mile. If you did breaststroke, it would have been even longer, so take pride.|||no not at all, i did a mile swim when i was about 12 and i did it with a mixture of freestyle, breaststroke and floating on my back until the lifeguards saved me. (last part was a joke) lol|||NO WAY

no way

thats not a cheat

as long as you did the full mile, you could do doggie paddle and its still a mile :)

hope it helped

---dem|||No, not at all. I suppose if you dog paddled the entire mile, it is still swimming a mile.|||NOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Absolutly not.|||Of course it is not cheating.

Whats the best swim suit to wear in a 100yd breaststroke race?

i am 14 years old and i just started swimming my 100 breast is low 1.15 and i wear a speedo but i heard a jammer is better and also what is the best tech-suit for 100yd breast|||Most people buy the suit that goes to the knee, so either a kneeskin or a jammer. The problem that most people have with the full bodyskin is that they say it constricts their knees so they cannot get the full range of motion for their stroke. But that is really up to you. If you don't feel too constricted, the mroe fabric the better!

Some great suits are:

Fastskin II

Fastskin Pro

LZR (but really expensive)

Tracer Light

Blue70|||when i went to the Olympic trials in Omaha every person in the 100m breaststroke finals was wearing either a lzr racer or a tracer light.

so i would assume that a full body suit would be best because of the gliding you must do during breaststroke, although i hear it is uncomfortable it is still the best option if you can afford it.|||just wear whatever you're more comfortable in. i swim for my high school and i think whatever you're more confident in will have more of an effect than the technicalities of the suit|||At your level of swimming it doesn't really matter. (no offense or anything)

Wear whatever is comfortable and just work on stroke technique to get faster; the suit wont make a big difference.|||Do whatever you are comfertable in. I am a swimmer too and if i don't feel comfertable i don't swim well!

Go fast!

Swim well!|||I've never known there to be any advantage of a jammer over a speedo in a short race. Though I have seen guy's wear both so I DUNNO!!

Is a backstroke to breaststroke turn a flip turn?

I've swam IM's before, maybe 6 last summer, but since then I haven't worked on my IM turns at all...and then my coach has put me in an IM tonight.

I've been watching videos but I am terribly confused.

Can a back to breast turn be a flip turn? Can I turn onto my stomach, do a flip turn, and then start my pull out?

Or is the flip a back flip?

Please, any tips would be helpful!

I don't swim during the year!|||There are a few ways that you can turn going from backstroke to breaststroke. Preference between them is up to you. I personally prefer a simple touch turn on 400 IM and a flip turn on 100 and 200 IM.

A flip turn is essentially a back flip. You touch the wall of the pool whilst on your back, bring your knees up to your chest and flip round so your feet push off the wall and you are front, ready to start your breast stroke. Do not turn on to your front before you are on breast stroke.

If you are not getting the hang of flip turns you can try a touch turn (make sure you you touch on your back and leave the wall on your front) or you can try a swivel turn.

A swivel turn is a bit more complicated but is as effective as a flip or touch turn. These turns have recently been approved by fina but they are technically the hardest to master because you don't want to be disqualified every time you swim IM. I'm not going to go into detail because it is hard to put into words. I recommend practicing your flip turns more in training so you become more comfortable doing them and they also become faster.

If you want to know which one is better for you, get your coach or parent to time you from flags to the wall and out again on each turn and the faster one is the one you stick with.|||Touch the wall with your hand then sort of pull your feet towards the wall (don't touch your other hand to the wall) and then push off into a breaststroke pullout.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGROwNmQX鈥?/a>|||just finish into the wall backstroke then bring ur feet to the wall and kick off and go into ur pullout for breaststroke|||The rules are simple ... you must finish each stroke (in this case backstroke) as if it is the finish of a race. THEN, how you transition to the next stroke is up to you. As long as you immediately start your new stroke using the rules that apply to that stroke you may choose how to turn.

This means that at the end of your backstroke you must touch the wall on your back. When you start your breaststroke you must push off the wall on your chest which means your hips are past 90 degrees facing the bottom of the pool.

So, although I totally discourage my swimmers from doing a back to breast flip turn, it is legal as long as you touch on your back and push off on your chest.

If you did the turn, come into the wall ... reach deep in the water with your fingertips facing the bottom of the pool. Your head should be looking over your shoulder and down your arm to your hand. Hit the wall with the palm of your hand and pull up on the wall. The wall, of course, does not move. However, pulling up on the wall actually forces your shoulders down and gets your legs moving.

As your shoulders start to move, pull your knees in TIGHT and directly over your head. As your knees come over, your feet will touch the wall.

The problem is getting your feet deep enough to push off at the proper depth and angle. Most people's feet are too high on the wall and, as a result, they're head and shoulders are too low and they push off the wall aimed downward. They then must get UP to the top of the surface of the water. This slows you down.

In addition, I like my swimmers to do an open turn as that breath of air helps them about 30 seconds after the turn as it takes that long for the air you just breathed in to get to your muscles.

Good luck ... I'd discourage you from doing that turn.

If my 200 yard breaststroke time is a 2:31 what should my 100 time be?

Trying to learn learn the breaststroke?

I've been trying to learn the breatstroke and I'm having a real hard time synchronizing the 2.

I can do the arms and I can do the legs, but I can't put them together.

Does anyone know of a website or something that can help me.|||When I was learning breast stroke, I liked to act like I was a little froggy, swimming around the pond. I'd do the froggy kick (Breast stroke Kick) and push my arms to the side. Eventally, I was able to put the arm motions into place. During that time I used only the brest stroke kick. After that was my primary kick, I pluged in the arms. It's tough work, but keep trying, take it slow, and you will eventally master it...|||Remember the phrase "Pull, Breathe, Kick" in that order. Stay conscious of that while you learn it.|||I would suggest going to a swim camp or club of some type around your area..or if you need.. swimming lessons.. it will be much easier to know whether you are doing things wrong or not, for an instructor or coach will be able to critque your stroke.|||from a streamline position, once you start opening your hands, bend your knees and continue both. they should end at same time.|||go to a local pool and take lessons,,

The muscle in the back of my knee pops and hurts like crazy every time i swim breaststroke?

what does this mean? could it be bad?|||It means that you have a knee injury. Probably a medial crucial ligament. Not serious, but occasionally painful, you should probably see a physician and a pt.|||I used to have that a little bit, it would happen during breaststroke and drylands. Im not sure but after a while it just went away. Try some heating pads or blankets in case its a muscle issue, or consult your doctor or nurse over the phone. Dont you hate swim-related injuries?

What swimming stroke is the bet for your arms? And also what muscles do the breaststroke target?

to tell you thye truth your first question is a question as for your second one its quite silly really, what muscles are targetd... well the ones that move... any ways lets get into the answer...

best stroke for arms--- freestyle(front crawl) every 3 breathing.

2)

breastroke: well the breastroke works mainly your lower body a bit of your upper body, shoulders arms chest.

many will tell you it doent work your arms and shoulders but trust me, my best stroke is breast so i swim it alot and my shoulders have gotten much broder. chest; you wont get pecs like the ones you'd get from bench press but you'll lose fat around the area making them "toned"

also remember that swimming will not get you "muscle" like alrnorld swats, heck not even close, rather becasue of the way swimming is done it'll tone you which means it will remove fat leaving you with definition in your arms, abs, legs. also do dry land trainning thsi helps alot, this doesnt have to be weights but running and push ups will do the trick|||the butterfly is really good for ur arms, and gives u swimmer boobs!! cause u use both hands, and not 1 at a time, and breast is just easy, and dosent really do anything...

What are good weightlifting excersices for a 100 meter breaststroke swimmer?

areas to work: shoulder exercises, legs (inner and outer thighs) , abs, lower and upper back. this is just off the top of my head. but remember you dont want to weight lift to build muscle you want to lift to tone and strengthen. which means low weight, 10-15 reps, of 3 sets. if i could reccomend anything use the elastic bands, and practice your stroke, running stairs, and kicking with a board in the pool.|||Lat pulldowns, low rows, reverse cable (for the recovery of the hands) for upper body. Abductor and adductor for the legs. Also, squats for the starts and turns. And also use bands for speed work.

Coming up to breathe when swimming BREASTSTROKE?

I watch videos of good swimmers doing breast stroke and they come up and back down really fast, when i do it, no matter how hard i try, i come up slowly and i can';t take a breath fast enough to go back into the water fast. I come up so slowly and smoothly and the swimmers in video come up fast and powerful?|||I had the same problem a few years ago when I first started swimming breaststroke and my coach always told me to angle my hims down when you start to come up for the breathe.. along with the powerful arms, hands, and shoulders. By angling your hips down, or pushing your hips a little toward the bottom of the pool it will be a natural movement for the head to come up, then you only have to worry about getting back into the water fast to start the next stroke. Hope I was helpful!|||my coaches always tell me to use my hips, which will push you up a bit, and give you a better kick. if you have a good, strong, fast, powerful kick, you'll be able to get up higher, and shoot your arms out faster. but, you also have to have a good pull when your arms are underwater, because that will also help your shoulders get up higher. just take real fast breaths because you know that you'll be able to take another one basically right away if you go fast enough|||im a swimmer. and i couldnt do fast breaststroke for the longest time! but now i go to state for swimming it so well!

to do a fast breastroke breathe you need-

1- strong muscles in your shoulder area

2- QUICK ARMS!!!!!!!!!!! this is the one i had a problem with, you need to pulll your hands in up to your chin then push them out as fast as you can!

3- exhail in the water while swimming, it saves you time so you can get a good breather when ur up to breathe..

HOPE I HELPED!|||It's all about the using your shoulders and your hands. When you come up; just when you come up,

push your hands together with a strong, cupped motion, as if you are clapping. At the same time,

shrug your shoulders as far up to your ears. Also, keep your head straight, looking down and then

smack your face/head into the far to push you forward.

Repeat.|||You need power to your shoulders and pecs. But remember you shouldn't try to go only up really fast, you have to also go fast forvard ;)

How does one correct a scissor kick in the breaststroke?

You should sit on a chair and watch yourself doing the frog kick. It is easier to see the difference between the two kicks and when you get the feel of the frog kick while watching yourself do it you can then feel the difference in the water.|||the best way is to just fully teach them how to do the correct kick.

you can have them hold onto a wall and you can do the motions for them.

remind them that you bring the legs in, and try to sweep out as far as possible.|||PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE|||how can you scissor kick while doing the breaststroke? a frog kick is a lot more productive.

What do you think is the faster stroke- breaststroke or butterfly?

is this a serious question?

i dont know anyone who can swim a faster breast than fly...fly is the fastest stroke other than free, and might even be faster than free if you get the right swimmer....theres a girl on my team who goes 1:06 in the fly and 1:09 in the free...definitely fly|||breast is one of the slowest, butterfly is one of the hardest. if you had to decide between the two-butterfly...|||actually, to the person above...

breast stroke is one of the most difficult and tiring if you do it right.

and butterfly isnt as difficult, if you do it right.

BUT, to answer your question. Butterfly is usually faster then breast stroke.|||It depends on your relative proficiency. My butterfly is so bad that I'm sure my breaststroke is faster. But a competent fly swimmer will beat a competent breaststroker any time.

The school swim heats are coming up, i'm doing 100m and 50m breaststroke?

I know this is a little late, but the school swim heats are tommorrow and i really need help! I am not good at swimming and to prove my point, my breaststroke time for 50m is 80:46 and if this helps, my freestyle time for 50m is 60:94. i really want some tips..|||If your times are that slow then you have really bad stroke mechanics ... they are so bad that it is as if you don't even know how to swim. So, get some swim lessons as there is NOTHING anyone on a message board can tell you that you will be able to apply that will make you faster in only one day.

Oh, and next time, try planning a little better.

What can I do to improve my 200 breaststroke?

I'm 16 and I just had a really good 200 LCM breast last season (2:36.51), but my short course time is a lot slower (2:20.21). Also, my coach says I need to work on my pullouts and turns, any advice about that? my turnover tends to be way too fast towards the end of a race when I am tired, so I start "spinning my wheels" any advice is appreciated :~)|||Don't worry, I am a victim of 'spinning' in the last meters of a race too.

I am not much of a breaststroke expert, more of a butterfly/backstroke one actually.

But I would suggest, before going into a race focus on the 3rd 50m, this should be where you put all your energy. On the last 100m count between each stroke, maybe you count to 2 between each stroke, it depends on you. When your racing you may feel the need to stroke faster, don't! Int he end your time will turn out faster. Good luck. Make sure you listen to your coach and ask him lots of questions, he has a lot of expertise. Have fun with your breaststroke :)

How should I go about improving my breaststroke time?

Breaststroke is a very technical stroke, and it would be hard to tell you what to do without seeing your breaststroke. But some points to remember:

-make sure you're not dropping your elbows when you pull in. Keep them high (ish), anchor your arms, and pull from there, making sure you get a lot of power.

-Make sure your kick is fast and make sure you have a good snap. A lot of people don't finish their kick, and instead just let their legs float back together after only kicking back. You should be pushing the kick until your legs are together again.

-Body movements are also important. In breaststroke, there is the same undulating motion as in butterfly. When you finish your pull, reach out in front of you as far as you can (make sure you're not diving down! It can feel like you aren't even when you are) until you feel your butt and legs rise - then start your next stroke.

-As you get tired, don't let your stroke fall apart. In breaststroke, it's hard to keep your stroke going, but keep making sure you feel that undulating motion.

-There should be three parts to your kick - pulling your heels back to your butt, separating the knees and positioning the feet, and then the kick back. Make sure you can feel each of these steps. A lot of swimmers try and combine the first and second step, and this leads to a lot of bad leg/feet positions before you kick, and bad positioning can lead to a lot of knee problems (I know, I've been there). So make sure you go through each of the steps. As you practice and get used to these motions, you can go through them quickly so that it may seem like you're combining the two steps, even when you're not.

-DON'T bob your head. Keep your head in line with your body. Instead of moving your head to breath, make sure when you pull you are bring your upper body out of the water so that you don't have to manually lift your head up - it should come up naturally if it's in line with your body. Then, shoot forward and reach.

- Make sure your turns are quick and your pullouts are powerful. You should be in and out of your walls very quickly, just drop your arm, bring your feet into the wall, and push off. It should be a very quick motion, but your coach can help you with this - it's hard to describe with text. Same with pullouts - I don't know what you're doing so I don't know how to improve. Just make sure you're getting a really good dolphin kick in there.

The most important thing you can do though, is practice. Keep doing drills that will help you, do some interval training to build endurance, etc. Good luck!|||the key thing to improving breastroke is having good pullouts and turns.

you should also focus on getting your butt high and keeping your knees close together while you kick.|||breaststroke is my best stroke.

heres what i do

- make sure to glide!!!

-pullouts and turns have to be good. use the pullout to catch your breath

-never turn to look in the other lane

-touch with 2 hands (obviously)

- stretch before. i tend to get very sore in my legs when i do breaststroke

Would breaststroke make my legs and arms bulky?

I have a lot of fat stored in my thighs. I want to slim it down, is breaststroke good for reducing the fat in that area?|||No, you won't get bulky because you are swimming. It makes you slim down. Women can't get bulky very easily, so I don't think you'll need to worry about that.|||All swimming builds lean muscle mass which trims body fat when you exercise. Forget strokes, any exercise is good for reducing body fat.

Not everyone is built like Amanda Beard - a great slim breastroker.

What are ways to build up breaststroke arm muscles through exercise?

what exercise can I do out of the water in order to build up my arm muscles for "hungarian" or "wave" breastroke?

hopefully without much equipment|||it doesnt help much but try by practicing breaststroke for about 4 laps just arms

if this startts to hurt try just ur legs to (which is very helpful)

but just to let you know you dont have to have extremely good arms to breaskstroke

i currently hold the record for breststroke in my county and i can swim almost the sam speed reguarly compared to just my legs|||You just have to swim breastroke to build up the arm muscles needed.

As for the legs though, do a lot of LUNGES.

Do these EVERY DAY.

Do one to the front with your right leg, one to the right with your right leg, and then one to the back right (opening up your hips) with your right leg. Do that 5 times without stopping.

Then switch legs and do the same thing except to the other side.

Trust me this works. My best stroke is breaststroke and I do these every day. I did it for a year (only like 5 mins a day) and in that year went from a 1:12 in the 100 breast to a 1:05.

I am 14.

What are the advantages of breaststroke swimming?

It is a more natural way to swim and thus less stress on your joints.

It is also a safe way to swim in that you can keep an eye on where you are ( especially when in open / natural water ) but also pool swimming.

Sea Tip: good opportunity to remind everyone to always swim parallel to or towards the shore but never swim away from it.|||It develops your chest more and is less tiring.|||The breaststroke is one of my favorite strokes to do, it gives me a leg and arm workout so I think you'd benefit from working out those parts of your body as well as strengthening your breathing and endurance.

How to Swim a Faster Breaststroke

By Jodi Freedman, eHow Editor

Rate: (0 Ratings)

Many swimmers think of the breaststroke as a slow and gentle stroke, but when executed efficiently, it can give you a solid workout and have you moving quickly. These simple pointers can help increase your time when swimming the breaststroke.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

1.

Step 1

Do not let your head become totally submerged in the water. Many novice breaststroke swimmers do not realize that they are doing this. You can shave seconds off your time by allowing the top of the head to remain above water throughout your stroke.

2.

Step 2

Make sure that your fingers form a mitten shape as your swim. This will form your hand into a more fin-like position and will allow you to move through the water faster then a swimmer who has her fingers apart.

3.

Step 3

Remember the timing of the stroke: Kick, Glide, Pull. Many breaststrokers try to kick and pull at the same time. This allows no time for the glide, which is where the effortless speed can happen.

4.

Step 4

Try doing breaststroke laps with a kick board. This will help strengthen your kick.|||Make sure that your feet are pionted outwards.|||keep your head down.hips up. shoot ur arms toward the wall.

How can I improve my breaststroke turn?

I lose about 2 secs. on my turn and it really hurts my time considering I'm .51 secs. away from an "A" time. Can someone send me a link and explain the steps for me, this is urgent, because my meet is tonight.|||ok breast is like one of my worse strokes im more free and back but ill try to help.

ok my coach always said you should be doing about 8 or 9 pulls per 25 so u really need to pull hard and long and that will shave a few hundreths off. when you are going to the wall speed up as much as you can but you have to be lightening fast off the wall. like two hand touch then bam your off my coach is always screaming faster off the wall and blahblah

try this site http://members.tripod.com/~breastroker/b鈥?/a>

hope it helps good luck tonight|||fist off - good luck tonight!

Breaststroke turns and start are where you win and lose races. To answer your question, you must first

-attack the wall. Swim in hard to the wall, this will help you transfer more energy into your push off.

-tuck your legs and heals into your rear end

-pull your chest close to the wall and start to twist to your preferred side this will happen naturally.

-plant your feet and and drop your bottom hand your body will begin to layout on your side.

-as you begin to sink shoot your top hand just behind your top ear into a tight streamline position

-push off HARD in a slightly downward angle

-stay tight toes pointed and hold that position until you feel your self start to slow down

-pull down HARD stay tight toes still pointed

- do not immediately kick glide with your hands at your sides until you start to slow. make sure you fingertips are extended and your palms are facing the surface. If you are doing this right the angle of your body and hand will act like a plane wing and use Bernoulli's principle of lift to cause you to get extra glide.

-slip your hands up your torso and kick yourself into a streamline to come to the surface.

-as soon as you get to the surface SWIM LIKE HELL.

you can do it. A second in the breaststroke isn't a lot to trim off with improved technique.

One last thing. Never look for they guy next to you EVER. it's just you and the walls. Attack the walls.|||touch turns always a little slower than flip turns so dont worry too much about it.

i swam the fly more but the turns are pretty much the same

right when you touch, turn your body slightly to the side your gonna push off from, the arm that is facing the other wall should extend and push off from the wall

writing descriptions makes it sound a lot more complicated then actually having a demo... watch videos of olympic swimmers.|||try not to stay on the wall for a long time and dont pull your body out of the water. try to stay low. get a private with your coach and fix the problems.|||http://www.breaststroke.info/newturn.htm

This like tells you alot of info on the turn

Hope this helped!|||what do you mean by turn?

do you not have a 50 meter pool??

How to take 11-13 seconds off my best breaststroke time?

My best 100 breastroke time is like 1:31:12....sectionals time is 1:20:something...i need a way to take about 11-13 seconds off my time..help|||Work on your technique:

Good pullout (dont forget the dolphin kick, etc)

Fast turns(look up, not to the side, hand right behind your head)

Strong kicking (kick a lot of breastroke in practice)

When pulling in keep your elbows in front of your chest and squeeze them together

Shoot your hands forward

When shooting forward go slightly down, not up

Completely finish your kick, leave time for a slight glide

Perfect your timing (I like to begin my kick right when I have sculled out with my hands/arms) so that you're driving your kick and arms simultaneously

Good luck!

What is the national record for the 100 meter breaststroke for girls?

At what age level? There are different records depending on age level.|||my best is 1.40.95|||Jenny Thompson

Easy, fun, effective method to teaching breaststroke?

I need help teaching children ages 5 to 10 to swim an adequate breaststroke. Any tips?|||The way I learned the arms was like scooping a bowl of ice cream, you're down to the last bit, and you want to get all of it, so you scoop the edges of the bowl. Don't know about the legs. Sorry!|||For me the easiest way to teach Breaststroke is to break it down into 3 steps pull, kick, glide

Start them of just pushing of the wall and staying streamline (hands out long and head down) when they get use to this bring in the arms or pull.

Get them to glide of wall and do 1 arm stroke and stop once they have got the correct arms bring the kick get them to glide of wall 1 arm stroke and 1 kick in that order also get them use to finishing in the glide position so in essence it's glide, pull, kick, glide

The first answer is correct for arms or another one is the pizza trace around the edge and cut down the middle

Legs are also easiest broken down into three steps up ,out and around

Step1 Up:Bring feet up to bottom

Step2 Out: Turn feet out heels together toes out

Step3 Around kick legs around till straight

Hope this makes your life a little easier

I am a really good swimmer and one of my friends started competive swimming too. I need some breaststroke tips?

I am a really good swimmer and have made it to the junior olympics so i really wanna come i first for a chance|||undulate! push forward with your chest and chin. make sure you keep your knees behind and "hide your heels". you sort of want to try to kick yourself in the butt. maybe try the drill where you put your hands on your butt, and you have to kick. you want to try to have your heels touch your hands. you can also try one up one under. you take one stroke above the water, and one under the water. it will help with the undulation. oh, and glide. if it's a sprint, you don't want to glide very much, but if it's a distance event you want to glide longer. good luck!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMoJVla31鈥?/a>|||when you do your kick you want to make sure you aren't pulling your legs out instead of up. to see if you are doing this do breaststroke kick on your back with a kick board over your knees if you move the kick board then your doing it wrong

make sure you dint move your head up and down its just a waste of energy and it slows you down|||Well, to not be specific, ask a coach. That's what they are there for.

How do you maintain a heads-up breaststroke without sinking into the water?

During breaststroke you should have a fast and strong inward pull of your arms, before you extend your arms forward. This will make your upper body move forward and up.

I hope that made sense. :D |||Forward velocity... keep yourself moving forward fast enough that the angle of your body generates enough upward force to offset the weight of your head..|||first of all your head shouldn't be "up" it should be tilted kinda its hard to explain- but you should have a strong kick and the correct hand movements to keep you up too|||swim with your head up lol, you gotta be strong enough to do it though. |||don't. it's bad for your neck if you swim a heads-up breaststroke|||Use your arms and your legs sweetie.

:) :) :)

Why is breaststroke considered a traditional swimming stroke?

Because people have always liked stroking breasts.|||beacuse that was the way gentlemen would swim during victorian england. Freestyle was considered classless because it involved splashing while breast would allow someone to propel themselves across the pool/lake without making any splashing

also, free was brought over from american indians and it wasnt until the trudgeon was developed that it became socially acceptable for a european to swim it|||I think because it isn't time consuming, neat, and "easy" to learn. It's also perfect for not using all your energy up.

Imagine if you were a lifeguard and you did the dolphin kick to go save someone :p

Is it faster to take your breaststroke strokes quickly or glide for a few seconds?

It's faster to glide for a few seconds the come up fast and take a breath, if you make your strokes too fast it's like your going no where|||The purpose of gliding is to propel you forward faster. In order to glide faster snap your legs together really hard when you kick.|||i agree with the first answer, glide by first pull-breath-kick then glide

Ways to cut down on my breaststroke time?

i have a 1:08....i want to get under a minute...how? what part of the stroke is most important...kick? pushoff? stroke? turnover?|||Since you are getting decent times I would assume that your stroke is pretty sound. To cut time in your swim work on the transitional parts of your swim. Work on your starts. Swimming short course? Work on your push off and your underwater glide. And of course work on finishing strong. Ask your coach or a fellow swimmer to help you with your stream lining. Also check your hand/arm position on your stroke. On your recovery, work on exploding forward into a long stretch into your glide.|||go faster|||the kick is the most important and try not to br3eath but once in the middle of the pool going both ways and at the turn that way you stay more streamline in the wateryou will go much afaster that way|||first off an 8 second drop is to much to set as a goal to. you need to have a set plan maybe this season you go for 1.04 talk it over with your coach. the other person was right about the kick it is very important but not the only thing. your stroke has to be perfect. more so than other strokes because so much of your body stays in the water. so work on your stroke! lifting is very important I use to lift 3 days a week an hour at a time. and don't get discouraged that 1 min barrier is very hard to break you might swim 100.01 a hundred times but when you break it. it gets easier and easier. Good Luck|||I have a 1:05 in 100 breast stroke in meters! What you do is have a quick whip kick. A slow kick will get you nowhere! Also, slightly bring your hands out of the water to get that stronger forward pull. In addition, don't move your head side to side, keep it at a 45 degree angle looking down at the water.|||the most important thing is the timming of the stroke. Remember: pull, breath, kick, glide! If you get this right it should improve a bit.|||keep ur head as close to the water as possible and a more powerful kick|||make sure that if your swimming with USa swimming rules, to do that dolphin kick as smoothly and as powerfully as you can. turn quickly, and slap your toes together at the end of every kick|||your kick and glide is the most useful part of your breaststroke.your upper body just tends to thrust u foward but the more powerfull your kick the further u glide so the faster u reach the wall. i went from a 2 minute time to a 90 sec. with that guidline.

Is this a good time for breaststroke?

I'm a freshman in high school and i can swim a 100 breaststroke in about 1:30. I know there's always room for improvement, but is this a good start?|||It depends on whether this is in meters or yards

if its in yards your 100 meter time is about a 1:39.90

if this is in meters then your yard time is about a 1:21.08 which is a good time

When I was a freshman in high school I swam about a 1:21 in yards at the beginning of the season and went down to a 1:17 by the end of that year. I've heard many great athletes and swimmers who swim in the Olympics say that breaststroke is the hardest stroke to swim because it seems like a relaxed easy stroke that it can be very difficult to swim quickly especially if your timing is even the littlest bit off. So don't feel bad if you think your times are to slow or whatever because every one is good and bad at different things

for example Im sure you could kick my but in fly any day :(|||its not bad but it really depends on what kind of competition you are up against. i am a soph and i swim a 1:20, but i friends who do like a 1:04. (new england swimming)

What is the best swim wear for breaststroke?

speedo, jammer, or legskins that covers up the entire leg|||It is personal preference really. Whatever you feel comfortable in. Some people feel like the full legs restrict their kick. I on the other hand like them.|||Aerodynamics doesn't appear to be much of an issue in the breaststroke. Legskins or Fastskins seem to be constrictive to the legs and arms. Briefs would seem the best to me, much more comfortable, swimming is work. Jammers, just not comfortable for work, OK for play at an outdoor pool or water park.|||speedo or jammer. most of the guys i see swimming are in jammers.|||its pretty much personal preference|||With breaststroke i think it would be a speedo. To me it always made sense that legskins or other full body covers hurt you because the water is suppose to run right off of the and even though most of the kicking is in your feet, your legs push some water to. that has always been my opinion but has never been confirmed.|||speedos legskins are bad for it, because they're restricting, so i think speedos would be best, then jammers|||if you are referring to fastskins or other performance suits then I'd say to go with the jammer for breaststroke. The Brief doesn't cover enough to make the purchase worth it, while the legskin would constrict your kick. The Jammer isn't as constricting while giving you the feel and confidence of wearing a FS or other performance suit. Without a doubt, go for the Jammer - take a look at all of the championship meets you will go to, all of the breaststrokers wear them.

What is a respectable 25 metres lap time for breaststroke and front crawl?

At a relaxed long distance type pace. Plus please share any other swimming tips you may have|||i take it front crawl is what i call freestyle.

Depends on your age and experience.

This is my estimates based on what i see at my swimming club every friday night

Breast Stroke: 26 seconds

Front Crawl (freestyle) 20 seconds

These times are probably a bit slow buit like i said im not sure what you would consider respectable|||a good time is 0.0007 seconds and good swimming tips - turn into a fish, it usually helps|||It depends on a lot of stuff, most importantly what your age and experience is. I'll answer this for me, a 16 year old who has been swimming for 8 years. I would probably consider anywhere from 24-27 a decent time for a 25 at a decent pace for breaststroke. 20 seconds is pretty good for front crawl.|||Front crawl (freestyle)- 11 seconds

Breastroke- 19seconds

But thats if your sprinting

Freestyle-16 seconds

Breastore-24

How can I improve my swimming speed (breaststroke or sidestroke)?

Training to be a SEAL and can complete every other requirement for the PST perfectly almost double...only I'm not so sure about the swimming part, in which i have to swim 500yds using breaststroke or sidestroke in less than or equivalent to 12 mins 30secs, and I know this is bad considering the SEALs are mainly in water but i really need to improve my swimming and speeds!!|||Although another answer provided a lot of information, I couldn't disagree with the answer more.

Swimming 500 yards is not a matter of building strength (unless you are as weak as a baby), it is a matter of building some basic endurance. Competitive swimmers need to lift ... you just need to finish in 12.5 minutes.

Your first effort should be to find a teacher/coach or someone who could help you to learn the proper stroke mechanics. Without good stroke mechanics you are basically "spinning your wheels" in the water as you are not getting much out of your stroke. As you learn the mechanics you should be practicing by doing short swims in a high school/college pool. Start by doing 12 - 20 one length swims with 15 seconds rest between each one. After a week, alternate one length with two lengths at a time (25 yds and 50 yds). After two weeks, see if you can do 8 four length swims. If you can do that, you can do 500 without stopping.

The big thing is that you MUST force your self to GO SLOW at the beginning of your swim. Take long gliding strokes. If you fatigue at the beginning, you'll be fatigued the whole way. So, go slow and avoid fatigue.|||A couple of thoughts. First, check out this video. This is the stroke they do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lUHudMN1鈥?/a>

Second, what is your experience in the water. They have to do more than swim well. They have to be rock solid in very difficult water conditions. I get the feeling you're not comfortable with swimming. The water part of their test is not just swimming in a pool. It's getting the crap beat out of you while you're in the water. They practice in the ocean where it's dark, cold and has waves. If you think you're going to learn to be comfortable in those condition just by pool swimming, I think you're wrong.

Even if you passed the swimming portion of the test (which wouldn't be too hard with some instruction and training), the next part would be brutal. Have you seen the shows about the training they do (or the pararescuers because it's the same)?

However, if you are comfortable in the ocean, being underwater, in cold, with waves then you should be fine. Watch the video, practice the stroke, time yourself and if needed practice. Best of luck!|||With the breast stroke, you need to increase the strength in both your upper arms and shoulders, and in so doing you will be able to carry the heavy packs that the SEALs carry with them. Might I suggest that you find some small nylon pouches, small enough to wrap around your wrists, but not ones that would hinder you in the event you got into trouble. Maybe the type I am thinking about are the ones that runners put on their legs and fill them with wet sand so it helps to build up their leg strength so they can endure many miles of hard running.

Anyhoo, fill these small nylon sacks with wet sand and then going slowly, so you can adjust to the additional weight of the wet sand, start your breast strokes through the water, if the weight around your writs is too light, then increase the weight with additional sand til you feel comfortable with it and practice using these nylon pouches wrapped around your wrists, both wrists, everyday.

Another way to accomplish this same goal is to stand in waist deep water, such as in your pool and with both wrists wrapped with these nylon pouches, kneel down in the water and go through the motions of extending your arms fully out and then bringing them to each side of your body and keep doing this til you get tired. Don't over do it, take it in measured steps, doing slightly more each day then you did the previous day and when you start doing the laps in the pool with the breaststroke, you will notice that you will seem to fly through the water with ease, almost as if you were born to be in water.

You do know that besides swimming, another requirement in order to be a SEAL is to be an accomplished scuba diver!

Also, doing 100 pushups every morning and 100 pushups every evening will also help to increase the strength in your arms and shoulders. Pullups also build up the strength.

Good Luck friend and by selecting the US Navy, you have selected the very best outfit to serve in.

The second answer to your question sounds good, however, you must keep in mind that this person was not training for a SEAL Team, but coaching probably a high school swimming team, which is terrific. I told you what I went through when I was told by a medical doctor that I had polio and that I would probably be wearing a leg brace for the rest of my life. My dad told the doctor in so many words, that this was bullshit and from that day forward, I would spend endless hours in the family pool, hanging onto the side in the deep end with nylon pouches full of wet sand around my bum leg and learning how to kick in unison. I would do this for as many as 4 hours each day after school, everyday for four years and the more I did it, the stronger my left leg got. I then was able to join the YMCA swim team and after 6 short months, I earned the right to be the anchor man on a 10 man relay team, we never lost one single match.

Many people may find it difficult to hire a swim coach, I didn't need one, my dad was an officer in the Marine Corps and if he said I could accomplish something, I had better accomplish it or its curtains for me. I still swim everyday as I am afraid that if I stop swimming everyday, the disease could come back and I sure don't cotton to becoming a cripple. I am 60 years old now and my legs are very strong, thanks to my dear old dad and his determination to always succeed at whatever you do.

If its worth doing it, then by god do it well.

I also spend several years in the Marines from 1968 to 1977.
