How can I make a breaststroke swimmer change her scissor kick to normal breaststroke?

I have tried to get this little girl to fix her kick. She keeps on turning her hips when she kicks so it looks like a scissor kick and she is getting disqualified. are there any drills that can help her?|||I'd highly suggest that you go to the pool and try this before you work with the kid. I always found that getting in the water and experimenting with a stroke change before I tried it myself with a kid or the team really helped me to explain what I wanted better than just reading or using my imagination.

Have her sit as close to the edge of the pool as possible.

Legs straight out, heels in the water toes straight up.

Ankles and knees touching.

Tell her to pull her heels up to her butt and her heels must stay touching the water and her toes may never touch the water.

Then, tell her to make HEARTS with her heels. Stress to her to FEEL the position of her feet and toes and knees. Use some key words like, "keep your knees close together, can you FEEL IT?"

Once she has mastered that, then put her in the water on the wall. Have her with one hand on the gutter and the other hand with her palm on the wall, fingertips pointing toward the bottom, elbow bent and supporting her body (body resting on her arm). If, when she swims, her right hip rotates down, then when she is on the wall have her place her hands with her LEFT hand up top. Have her practice the same kick.

If it is OK with her (maybe have her parents nearby watching as people today sometimes get 'weirded' out when someone is touching their kid ... ask the kid if it is OK to hold her ankles, too), get in the water with her and, if necessary, hold her ankles with your hands and place your thumbs near the arches of her feet but closer to her heels. You can create pressure with your thumbs to help her stay level.

Finally, once she is kicking correctly on the wall, put her on a kick board.

Let me know how this works ... write me an email at the same screen name and at yahoo.com.|||try some land exercises

then just practice it, out of the water first

she'll get it eventually
